The BladeRoom modular data centre system can be deployed in a number of ways to provide fast-track, energy efficient data centres. Modular data centres can be installed as part of a new build greenfield development, increase space in brownfield applications or be used inside existing structures.

Using the BladeRoom system, large data centre facilities can be made operational in just 18 weeks, whereas a traditional approach to projects may take as much as a year.

Greenfield and Brownfield Sites

A BladeRoom data centre is built from pre-engineered structures with a 60-year design life. Containing fully integrated M&E they are transported in sections and craned into position, rapidly creating new data centre capacity of any size.



The BladeRoom sytem allows a large greenfield site to be unlocked quickly for the minimum capital investment




Inside Industrial Buildings

BladeRooms are easily installed in existing industrial buildings enabling additional security and anonymity. More simply they can be used as a means of incorporating BladeRoom efficiency into an existing structure.



The typical host structure is likely to be a portal frame building which will have the advantage of offering large volume internal space in a ready to use building most probably located in an urban environment close to industrial/commercial centres.

BladeRoom data centres can be easily sited inside the structure and if internal heights allow can be double stacked, further maximising land use.

Technically, few additional measures are required to enable a BladeRoom data centre to be sited inside an existing industrial building and air intakes and exhaust louvres will need to be in contact with free air. BladeRoom has a bespoke link and ducting system that can be used to make this easily achievable.

Connection to services takes place in the usual way with the services needing to be installed and in position before the BladeRoom data centre is delivered to site.





Upgrades and Extensions - Data Centre Expansion

Able to be sited in a variety of locations with minimal disruption to the existing premises, a BladeRoom data centre is an ideal way to carry out data centre expansion.



Data centre expansion is possible faster than before with the BladeRoom system. The overall capacity of a site can be increased by the addition of BladeRoom data centres in single or multi-storey configurations.

They can be rapidly delivered, 'IT-ready' for fast-track capacity increases. BladeRooms can also be used to increase the footprint and capacity of an existing data centre or add additional/dedicated zones of varying density or tiers of resilience - e.g. you can simply add an independent Tier 4 BladeRoom to your existing data centre in a cost-effective way as long as Tier 4 specified infrastructure is made available to support it.

As a result of the maximisation of activity in the factory and the reduction of on site disruption during the installation process, a BladeRoom data centre can be utilised for data centre expansion in a number of ways to occupy space that previously would have been considered unusable.





Temporary Data Centre Facilities

The fast-track, relocatable nature of the BladeRoom system makes it ideal for temporary use, offering an ideal solution for temporary data centre facilities.



With a 60-year design life, data centres are designed for permanent use but also make excellent temporary data centre facilities.

Full sized data centres with high ceilings and wide corridors

The system combines the benefits of complying with all external engineering and technical requirements as well as being a relocatable asset.

Customers can make use of the BladeRoom system's unique design to relocate facilities after a short period of time.



A BladeRoom data centre system has been developed to minimise installation and commissioning risk as far as possible.

The BladeRoom data centre and condensing units for back-up mechanical cooling will be delivered to a site fully prepared to receive them.

The site needs to be accessible by trucks and cranes of appropriate size. The site will need to be level with foundations of sufficient structural capability to support the data centre - detailed drawings will be supplied by BladeRoom to achieve this.

Depth of foundations under the piers or base will be dependent on existing surface conditions and how many storeys are required.

Drainage provision will need to be considered at the same time that foundations and building support is planned. Waste/recycling collection points will be required for condensate from cooling coils and from the humidifier section.

Scaling of each of the incoming services will be dependent on the size of each BladeRoom installation.

Electrical Supplies

Each BladeRoom is designed to meet client-specific requirements.

The BladeRoom data centre and condensing units for backup mechanical cooling will be delivered to a site fully prepared to receive them.

We will need to agree how you want to provide your incoming power supplies, dependent on your experience and preferences and taking into account your Tier 2, 3 or 4 requirements. Our Uptime Institute Tier Accredited Designer mechanical and electrical services consultants can assist with this if required.

Incoming power supplies from the primary electrical infrastructure can enter the power management room through a dedicated service hatch in the floor, meaning all services can be securely buried underground in ducts with nothing left exposed. Alternatively, if the data centre inside an existing building, mains services can be brought in at high level through dedicated fireproof service ways.

Back-up power generation and UPS will be discussed to decide how you prefer to have these designed - for example, you may favour centralised external UPS, or if you would prefer BladeRooms to incorporate battery UPS within the power management rooms.

Telecoms entry at high level, underfloor also possible

Telecoms cable - we will agree where and how you wish to provide a "meet-me" area for fibre in/out of the BladeRoom facilities.

Cold water supply - Required for the Adiabatic cooler, a potable mains water supply at 2bar. Typically this will be a 15mm (1/2") connection.

Drainage - A trapped gully of similar means of connecting to drainage will be required to allow disposal of condensate and humidifier blow down.

Site connections to central points may be required for:

  • BMS
  • BEMS
  • security
  • fire

Generally service points would be floor entry within each power management plant room.





Depending on the current available services at your site and the resilience rating you are looking to achieve, further power infrastructure may be required to support your data centre.

BladeRoom data centres are delivered to site with all internal electrical distribution already installed and ready for rapid connection to incoming power supplies, whether from an existing site setup or a new dedicated power infrastructure.

Each BladeRoom contains 2 x Form 4 Type 6 switchboards into which the A and B UPS supplies are terminated.

Dual busbars are provided along the length of the hot zone with tap-off units to each of the A & B busbars located in the hot aisles at the back of the racks.

The A & B busbars in each hot aisle accept tap-off units at any point along their length that connect to rack mounted power strips. This allows complete flexibility of IT power across the racks, with high, medium and low power racks able to be located anywhere in each rack row.

The system is extremely flexible and is able to connect to any configuration of electrical infrastructure, the only proviso being the resilience you are looking to achieve.

Incomming UPS supplies from external electrical plant terminate in the switchboards located within dedicated power management rooms

The BladeRoom System can be provided to any required Tier Rating. However in order for the whole site to achieve a certain Tier rating the external power infrastructure would need to be designed and installed to a matching Tier rating.

The following BladeRoom incoming power, UPS and generator configurations should be adhered to meet Uptime Institute Tier specifications:

Tier 2:

  • Single UPS-backed power distribution path
  • UPS - Configured to N+1
  • Generators - Configured to N+1
Tier 3:
  • Dual power distribution paths, at least one of which must be UPS-backed
  • UPS - Configured to N+1
  • Generators - Configured to N+1
Tier 4:
  • Dual power distribution paths, both UPS-backed
  • UPS - Configured to 2N
  • Generators - Configured to 2N (or alternative fault tolerant solution)

Typically we would not provide the primary electrical infrastructure elements of a project. We would instead deliver the completed BladeRoom data centre to site once power infrastructure was completed, simply connecting up to the available power supply to make the system quickly operational.
